About

Nadia Celis is an Assistant Professor at Bowdoin College, where she teaches Latin American, Caribbean and US Latinos’ Literature and Culture. Originally from Colombia, Prof. Celis received her B.A in Linguistics and Literature from the Universidad de Cartagena, Colombia, and both her MA and Ph D from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Her research explores practices of embodiment and its impact on the development of female subjectivities as well as Caribbean cultural identity, in both literature and popular culture from the Hispanic Caribbean. Prof. Celis’ publications include articles on authors such as Marvel Moreno, Fanny Buitrago and Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia), Rosario Ferré and Mayra Santos-Febres (Puerto Rico), as well as essays considering cultural phenomena such as dance and performance or sexual tourism. Prof. Celis is currently working on her book-length project: “The Rebellion of the Girls: Bodies, Power and Subjectivity in the Hispanic Caribbean”, which studies the portrayal of girlhood and coming of age in Caribbean Writers.
